Adult Literacy

M-POWER is the largest provider of adult literacy services in Alabama.

According to the Literacy Council, there are as many as 100,000 adults who read below a fifth-grade level. They cannot read a newspaper, a job application, or a medicine label. They are functionally illiterate.

M-POWER Literacy is committed to serving these adults in our community through one-to-one literacy instruction. We are one of only two providers and the only Christian provider in Jefferson County that does one-to-one matches of adult learners with trained adult tutors.

M-POWER Literacy recruits and trains adults in the Laubach method of literacy instruction. Tutors are then partnered with a learner. Our learners range from young adults wanting to complete a GED to senior adults wanting to read the Bible. The pair meets at least 1 ½ hours per week at a time and place convenient to both.

Our learners have gone on to complete GEDs, find employment, become church deacons, and even literacy tutors.

If you can read, you can teach someone to read!
